Stew McKnelly grew up in Alexandria, Va and and started his goalie career at St. Stephen's school for boys (Now St. Stephens and St Agnes) , he then went on to attended Trinity-Pawling School (T-P) in Pawling New York and graduated in 1986. While at T-P, Stew was name to the All-New England team his junior and senior year.
Stew went on to play one year of lacrosse for Mike Pressler at Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU). Upon graduation from OWU Stew joined the United States Marine Corps and has been serving as a CH-46E helicopter pilot for that past 21 years.
Upon his transfer to Norfolk in the summer of 2007 Stew became involved with the North Beach area of HRLax. Over the past 7 years he has coached all ages from U-9 to U-15 for HRLax while serving as the Director of North Beach Lacrosse and the Southside representative to the Youth Director of HRLax. Currently, Stew is the Head Coach of the High School Hampton Roads Ironclads travel team.
Stew is married to his wife Katie and 3 children. Meghan is a senior at Cape Henry Collegiate who has surpassed her father's abilities in the goal and is verbally committed to take her talents to the University of Delaware to play lacrosse. Matthew is a rising freshman at Norfolk Academy and plays lacrosse for Hampton Roads Ironclads U-15s. Michael is a rising 6th grader at Cape Henry Collegiate and plays HRLax U-13s with North Beach and VB Select for Coach Scott Holava. Stew is currently the Operations Officer for the Joint Forces Staff College.
